It was my last foggy morning on Campobello Island. I was out walking with my coffee, and somewhere along the road I started thinking about my wedding ring.

Not in a sappy way. More like a question I couldn't put down. What is this ring actually for?

The more I sat with it, the clearer the answer got. When I look down at my ring, I don't see a message for anybody else. I see a reminder. Of the commitment Becca and I made to each other. To keep supporting each other. To keep making each other better. To keep growing together for as long as we get.

And once I noticed that, I realized the ring isn't the only reminder I carry. There are a few small things I keep close for the same reason. Little things that pull me back to how I want to show up in the world, especially when I get busy and start trading being for doing.

That's what this piece is really about. Not the ring itself, but the quiet reminders we carry to stay close to who we want to be.

There's more to the story too. Including nail polish, a tattoo, and the strange history of the wedding ring itself. I get into all of it in the full essay.
